Here’s a great new video from Trevor Dickson’s new album, ‘Passion Fruits’. He came by Spleenless Mastering to master it in September and we had a lot of fun working on this finely orchestrated and upbeat record.

‘Nebraska’ by Alexander Payne out on Nov 15th

The soundtrack to Alexander Payne’s new film Nebraska was mastered here at Spleenless Mastering. It stars Bruce Dern and Will Forte with the soundtrack by Mark Orton. The film will be out in theaters on November 15th. Check out the trailer below.

Two New Records from Ben Goldberg

Ben Goldberg released two new records mastered here at Spleenless Mastering, “Unfold Ordinary Mind,” with a quintet including the guitarist Nels Cline and two tenor saxophonists, Ellery Eskelin and Rob Sudduth; and “Subatomic Particle Homesick Blues,” including the tenor saxophonist Joshua Redman, the trumpeter Ron Miles and the bassist Devin Hoff.

Both really great jazz records with a louder modern sort of mastering style. There’s also a nice write up of the records in the NY Times.

All of our mastered records carry the ‘Mastered for iTunes’ stamp of approval.
This is true.

But what it means is that our records can be sold in two formats and at two price levels. We deliver records at the normal MP3 quality (16bit), and also in iTunes loss-less format (24bit).

New ‘Tin Hat’ record out now

Earlier this summer I finished mastering the new Tin Hat record, the rain is a handsome animal (New Amsterdam Records). It’s 17 songs from the poetry of ee cummings. Its a fresh record from Tin Hat thats a bit of departure from their signature sound bringing in more vocal arrangements to their quirky sound. It also utilizes Apples new “Mastered For iTunes” protocol. Check it out!
A new record from Nels Cline and Ben Goldberg from Tin Hat should be out shortly as well.

New K record

I just finished mastering a new record by “K.” , also know as Karla Schickele. It’s really well written and fun record. I’m not sure when its going to come out but be sure to have a listen when it does!

Cory Arcangel at the Whitney Museum

Cory Arcangel has a solo show at the Whitney Museum in New York. The show is called “Pro Tools”, a well played title. I’ve worked on several of Cory’s Projects over the years. In this show is a piece called “Paganini’s 5th Caprice”. Its hundreds of youtube videos edited together to play one of the hardest classical pieces to perform. I mastered it and did a ton of restoration;.) But in the end they’re still youtube videos…

Sonic Hauntology

I generally don’t post about my art projects on my mastering website, but this may be of interest to a lot of you. I’m in a research collective on sonic weapons, called AUDiNT together with Toby Heyes (Cocosolidciti), and Steve Goodman (Kode9 + Hyperdub). We have a show opening up in New York at Art in General called the “Dead Record Office”. We built a infrasonic subwoofer, along with custom bittorrent encryption software call the “Ghost Coder”. For those of you interested in sub bass, and hauntology should check out our show. I think its up until the end of July.

“AUDiNT, short for “Audio Intelligence” is a collaborative, research team comprised of artists and scholars Steve Goodman, Toby Heys and Jon Cohrs.

Since 1945, AUDiNT has been conducting research, rituals, and experiments into the opening of the 3rd ear, a dimension that materializes when sound, ultrasound, and infrasound are simultaneously deployed in a precise schema of sequencing, duration, and amplification. The 3rd ear forms a conduit for the channelling of voices and frequencies, allowing communication between the living and the dead, sanity and insanity and between disparate locations in space and time.

Adapting to, and capitalizing on the viral dynamics and tactical battlefields of 21st century digital networks, we are systematically uploading the AUDiNT research archive that has been compiled throughout the past 60 years. Our research concerns the hauntological power of sonic weaponry). This ritualized uploading of the spectral archive aims to create a prospective archive of wave-formed affect that is propagated throughout the living dead networks of our communication systems. This tactical shift – to open up our archive to the public – relates to our new mandate of arming the mass populace with the efficacy of sonic weaponry so that it does not become the sole preserve of the military-entertainment complex. With its dark science and sonically dissonant content, Dead Record Office is the enshrined location from which this viral transfer begins.”

New PT. Juncture WA record out

New Gear

A bunch of new gear. We’ve picked up some nice new gear. Most notably a Manely Vari-Mu and a TK Audio SSL style buss compressor, only cleaner than the original. More of our gear here.
